I decided to make a compilation of pictures and video footage from our time in Manila, during the ADCC Asian Championships. They added a beginners division to help foster the growth of grappling/ Jiu Jitsu in our neck of the woods. I just wanted to share you this little slice of awesomeness to show you all what Pages Brothers BJJ PI has been up to. So sit back, relax, and set your eyes on this slick little flick by yours truly. A 98BJJ production.
ADCC Asian Championships was a success. We had 4 of our team mates (Jose S. Padilla Jr., Lorenzo Ayco, Jes Catayas, and Kevin Wong) leave with their coach (PJay Pages) and a few of our team mates for support and a fun trip to Manila. The venue was really awesome. It was located in the out door auditorium facing Manila Bay in the SM Mall of Asia. There were to large size competition rings with plenty of warm up space. The event started a little late but when it got start, things ran very smooth. I have to say that these referees did a great job at reffing the matches. They were very attentive and never had their attention pulled away from the match at hand by some external interference and the event organizer organized a great event. By bringing such big BJJ organizations like IBJJF and ADCC to the Philippines can only help to put the Philippines on the map for BJJ on a global level. So a big cheers goes out to Stephen Kamphuis for bringing these 2 big BJJ/ Grappling organizations out here to the Philippines. So now on to our matches and our boys. First up to represent 98 BJJ was Jojo Padilla. He got a by on his first match and got bumped to semi finals where he got submitted with an arm lock to the guy who would later win the division. Jojo was able to rest up for his next round. This next round was a nail better, let me tell you, with their back and forth action. In about the last minute and a half the score was 0-0 with Jojo's opponent having a -1 point. His opponent scored a take down for two points. almost passing his guard. He ended up in Jojo's half where the guy left his elbow exposed and Jojo went for the kimura and reversed the position to come up top with the kimura still set in place for a 2 point reversal. The timer buzzed. End of the round. Jojo wins Bronze. Second to represent 98 BJJ was Jes Catayas. Jes' opponent was a tough guy. This is the definition of a sand bagger. Jes fought his take downs as best as he could and played his grip fighting very well as usual. His opponent came with a very good background in wrestling. Having wrestled since high school as rumor has it. He gain good positional dominance against our team mate but was unsuccessful in submitting him. Jes would go to lose by points. Third to represent 98 BJJ was Kevin Wong. Kevin went against a very strong 4 stripe blue belt. Through their match, Kevin scored a slick scissor take down. Unfortunately it was not passed to 2 minute mark to receive points. He then got his back taken where he would spend most of the match in fighting off valiantly his opponents back attacks. His opponent would prove unsuccessful in submitting Kevin Wong from the back. Kevin lost on points. The fourth to represent 98 BJJ was Lorenzo Ayco. Lorenzo went to battle the most out of the 4. Through all 3 rounds, Renzo seemed to have an endless tank of gas as he would keep pushing the pace and making his opponents play his game. The first round was a very exciting match. Renzo's opponent was a very squirmy guy and would keep spinning on his back like a turtle. Renzo was playing his guard passing with the same tenacity as you would expect when you roll with him. Even more in the tournament. At the last minute, Renzo ended up in his opponents half guard where he would go to submit his opponent with a head and arm/d'arce choke. Second round was a real on the edge of your seat kind of match. Renzo's opponent had a descent DLR guard where he got caught up in it a couple of times but did not get swept or scored on. Whew. There was a lot of back and forth action where Renzo would keep pushing the pace to pass his guard. There was noe point scored in their match. 2 Minutes over-time was added where both ended in a messed up fifty-fifty guard position. Renzo looked like he was gonna tap but he 'SUCK'd IT UP!!!' and went through to finish the over-time. No points. Renzo received the win of the match for his aggressiveness and moved on to the finals. His Opponents corner got a bit butt hurt..... heheheheh. They had a good rest before they started the final match for gold/silver. The 3rd round started with some very good grip fighting. All of the action on this round was on their feet. Renzo's opponent had a very strong this clinch that Renzo was able to get out of numerous times but eventually got submitted with a guillotine. Renzo would go to receive silver. With all of the hard work on and off the mats by our competitors and our team mates and by the support of our friends and family, our team was able to bring back home 2 medals, showing the effectiveness of training at Pages Brothers BJJ. A big congratulations to my students that competed. I'm proud of you all for putting yourselves out there and testing yourselves. OSS!!! ~PJay Pages, Pages Brothers BJJ PI |
