Good day Pages Brothers BJJ Familia. I held the first team meeting a little over a month ago at our gym. It seems to be successful with a few that attended. And also successful in the growth we have seen since then. I posted a quick summary of key points that were made during the meeting about dedication, commitment, and stewardship. My brother, coach, and friend, Jay Pages (our head instructor of the Pages Brothers BJJ Association), came across my post I made in our facebook fan page (of which is still up) and reiterated and elaborated on my meeting. I would like to share a little bit here and also invite you to visit the link below to where the rest of this post can be read. So here is the post as per my words and then followed by Jay Pages. Cheers!
"My brother, PJay Pages (Head of Pages Brother BJJ, PI) recently had a meeting with his students/team to discuss training, the team, and the gym. The reason for this meeting was an attempt to boost consistency in training amongst his students. He has just started teaching and he is experiencing his first hurdle as a BJJ instructor. A hurdle that we all, as instructors come across at one point in time. Inconsistency! It’s almost a regular thing with a lot of schools and students around the world. You’ll have your dedicated students and then you’ll have your students that come and go. He brought up some great points during his meeting that he posted for his students on Facebook that I would like to reiterate and add to my students and to anyone else that would like to heed my words.
Just as my brother and most any BJJ instructor, my main purpose in teaching and leaving corporate America was to spread the art and the culture of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. An art I love and hold dear to my heart. I don’t do it for money, fame, or fortune; I do this so I can share a lifestyle. I do this so I can share an art that has touched and affected lives all around the world, including mine. I want to share and spread Jiu-Jitsu because it has positively affected my life as it has affected my brother and millions of others around the world.
In order to spread the art many of us love so much, we need to be successful. Successful in more ways than one. Successful in the gym, in competition, and in life. We all want to be successful in what ever it is we seek success in. It’s human nature. A lot of times, success can not be found alone. Whether people want to admit it or not, we all need help in one form or another and to one degree or another. It typically takes the efforts of multiple individuals to find success. For example, you can’t expect to be the best in wrestling with out a training partner or you can’t expect to be the best playing baseball without a coach and without a team. The same goes for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Schools. You need the coach and you need the students. A school/team is only as strong as their weakest link. Which is why I feel this article would be beneficial to both instructors and students alike to help strength every aspect of training inside and outside the gym. I feel this will help clear things up and help motivate students and instructors to work together to create the best gym, the best team, and the best environment that breeds positivity and breeds success!
Just as my brother said, “it’s not enough to just want these things to happen in order for it to take place. We need to put forth some effort!” Action needs to take place! You can say you want things to happen, but it’s not going to happen by sitting on the couch or making excuses of why you can’t do this or why you can’t do that!"
